Google launches online IT degrees in India
BANGALORE:
Search engine giant Google and online education company Udacity on
Monday launched IT courses in India, branching outside the US to tap the
country´s millions of software developers scrambling for jobs.
The pair teamed with Indian conglomerate Tata to offer online technical training courses, focusing on teaching software developers to build apps for Android, the Google-backed mobile operating system.
Costing 9,800 rupees ($148) a month, the degrees will take between six and nine months to complete, with lessons from Google instructors based in the United States. Students will get 50 percent of tuition costs back on graduation.
Google is looking to cash in on skilling up many of India´s 3.6 million developers, the second largest number worldwide, while at the same time seeking more developers who can programme for Android devices.
"While India has millions of software developers, we still lag behind in creating world-class apps," Google India managing director Rajan Anandan told reporters in India´s IT hub of Bangalore.
The companies will also offer 1,000 scholarships and all graduates will be invited to a job fair next year hosted by Google in India.
The launch comes as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi heads to Silicon Valley this weekend as part of a visit to the US, seeking foreign investment in India´s plethora of start-ups as well as financial tieups with US tech giants.
Modi, who will meet Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg, is expected to reassure IT CEOs of efforts to reduce red tape and make it easier to do business in India, a massive market of 1.26 billion people.
India also boasts a large number of engineering and IT specialists who have left the country to rise to the top of the US corporate world, including Google´s new chief executive Sundar Pichai and Microsoft boss Satya Nadella.

Protesters gather in Hong Kong a year since mass rallies
Hong Kong: Protesters are due to gather once more in Hong Kong on Monday, a year since the start of huge pro-democracy rallies that brought parts of the city to a standstill.
But with no concessions on political reform from authorities in Beijing and Hong Kong, campaigners, disheartened by a lack of progress, say they do not plan to start more mass demonstrations.
Monday´s events are instead billed as a time for reflection as activists try to develop strategies to breathe new life into a movement which has lost momentum.
Occupy Central was launched a year ago, calling for fully free leadership elections in the semi-autonomous city, following more than a week of student protests.
Thousands joined the already large crowds after police fired tear gas in the afternoon of September 28, a move that shocked the public and galvanised the Umbrella Movement -- named after the umbrellas protesters carried to shelter from sun, rain, tear gas and pepper spray.
For more than two months the centre of the city became an entrenched rally camp.
On Monday, activists will first gather at midday at the "Lennon Wall" -- an outdoor staircase near the government headquarters that was plastered with thousands of multi-coloured paper notes expressing support during the protests.
It was at the heart of the sprawling protest site in Admiralty district, where the main pro-democracy rally will take place later Monday afternoon.
There will be a moment of silence at 5:58 pm (0958 GMT) -- the time when the tear gas was fired.
Pro-Beijing groups are also due to march in two central areas of Hong Kong Monday afternoon.
Police will deploy 3,000 officers, the South China Morning Post reported, citing unnamed police sources.
36 Pakistanis martyred, 85 still missing after Mina stampede
ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Religious Affairs has confirmed the martyrdom of 36 Pakistanis as a result of the Mina stampede in Saudi Arabia while, according to the minister, 217 of the missing Pakistanis have made contact.
The Ministry of Religious Affairs has released the names of the 36 Pakistani martyrs in a list on its website.

Sardar Yousuf further said that 12 out of 34 of the Pakistanis who sustained injuries in the incident have been discharged from hospitals after treatment while the rest are still receiving medical aid in Saudi Arabia.
He said that if the family members of the victims wish to visit Saudi Arabia, the government would provide them all possible help.
At least 769 Hajj pilgrims from various countries were martyred as a result of a stampede last week in Mina where they had gathered to stone the devil as a ritual for this year's Hajj.
More than 900 pilgrims were injured while scores others went missing in the incident.
PM Nawaz Sharif says:
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who is presently in New York for attending the United Nations General Assembly session, said difficulties are being faced in finding the missing pilgrims after the Mina stampede.
However, he hoped that the situation would become clear soon.
On the advice of the prime minister, the religious affairs ministry has set up a helpline to assist and help out those concerned about their loved ones.
The helpline can be accessed by calling the toll-free number 042111725425 from inside Pakistan, while callers from Saudi Arabia or other countries can dial 8001166622 for help.
