At 17, Elle Fanning is already a movie star, appearing in films like Maleficent with Angelina Jolie, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button with Brad Pitt, and We Bought a Zoo with Matt Damon, to name just a few of her A-list co-stars. And yet, in About Ray, out September 18, the teenager is front and center.
Playing
a transgender teen, Ramona, later Ray, Fanning acts alongside Naomi
Watts, who plays her mother, and Susan Sarandon, her grandmother.
Transitioning from female to male, the actress felt a deep sense of
responsibility, “I was really nervous not to screw up, because this is
for transgender kids out there,” she told The EDIT by NET-A-PORTER.
“We had trans kids at my school. They come back after the summer and
you have to use different pronouns.” For accuracy’s sake, she wore a red
wig chopped into a boy’s barber shop cut—far from the cute pixies that
have ruled Hollywood lately—and bound her breasts: “It’s like a sports
bra that you wrap around,” she said of the constricting
apparatus, “only, it’s Velcro. And it really kills your back!” She wore
one every morning during the shoot. “It hurt so bad!”

With About Ray, Fanning
is undergoing a transition herself so to speak: from child actress to
standalone star. “I worked with adults and experienced a lot of things
[at a young age], so I got to form who I am a bit quicker,” she
admitted. “Now, I am who I am and I’m comfortable with it. I wouldn’t
rebel just to break the rules, but if I ever wanted to do something, I’d
just do it. It’s my life, and I’m going to follow the path I want.”
Unlike
her peers, however, Fanning’s not addicted to her iPhone, nor is she
documenting every second of her life on Snapchat. “This generation is so
into it, they’re always on the phone,” she says, acknowledging that
yes, she does have a private Instagram account. “Some celebrities have
all of these photos and witty captions. But what if I didn’t have that
and [my account] was a complete fail that no one followed?”
